After you install Remote Server Administration Tools for Windows 7 on a computer that is running Windows 7, the Dial-in tab is missing in the properties of a user account in the Active Directory Users and Computers Microsoft Management Console (MMC) snap-in. While Microsoft is aware of this problem, they don’t offer a real solution. Instead they offer several workarounds [1]which all require you to use another computer (not running Windows 7). If you want to actually fix the problem, and restore the Dial-in tab on the Windows 7 computer you are using, I’ve found a way.
The issue occurs because the installer for the Windows 7 RSAT (remote server administration tools) is missing two DLL files needed for the Dial-in tab. I’ve found that by using the some DLL files found in the Server 2003/2008 RSAT installer, you can restore the Dial-in tab with full functionality. To do this:
- Make sure the Windows 7 Remote Server Administration Tools [2] (choose 32-bit/64-bit as appropriate for your system) are already installed.
- Download this EXE [3] file to your desktop.
- Double-click the downloaded file, and when prompted, extract the files to the root of the same drive Windows is installed on (generally “c:\”).
- Go to where you extracted the files and look for the Install.cmd file.
- Right-click the Install.cmd file and select “Run as administrator”.
- You’ll need to tell the script if you are using a 32-bit or 64-bit system; follow the prompts.
- You may get several dialog boxes informing you about the installation progress. Press OK on any such windows.
- That’s it!
You may need to restart your computer to see the Dial-in tab.
Thanks to Scott Marty for the help with getting this to work on 64-bit systems.
